Bitumen

Durable binder for roads, waterproofing, and heavy construction.

Bitumen, a versatile oil-based substance, plays a crucial role in construction and infrastructure development. It is primarily used as a binder in asphalt for roads, airport runways, and parking lots, offering durability and waterproofing qualities. Additionally, bitumen is utilized in roofing applications and as a sealing agent in various building materials.

HI-SPEC emphasizes expertise in trading high-quality bitumen with a commitment to innovation and sustainability—meeting rigorous industry standards and delivering tailored solutions for diverse applications, reinforcing reliability and leadership in the oil trading sector.

Production process

The process of producing bitumen involves refining crude oil to extract the heavier residues that form the base material. Here is a simplified overview:

  1. DistillationCrude oil is heated in a distillation tower to separate lighter fractions (such as gasoline) from heavier residues. The remaining atmospheric residue undergoes further processing in a vacuum distillation unit to avoid thermal cracking.
  2. Vacuum DistillationThis step reduces pressure to lower boiling points, allowing the production of bitumen with varying hardness levels. The residue from this process, known as vacuum bottom, is the primary material for bitumen.
  3. Air blowing (oxidation)Air is blown through the vacuum bottom at high temperatures to modify its physical properties, such as stiffness and softening point. This process produces different grades of bitumen for various applications.
  4. Blending and quality controlBitumen may be blended with other materials to meet specific engineering standards. Rigorous testing ensures consistency in properties such as penetration, softening point, and elasticity.

HI-SPEC focuses on sourcing quality feedstocks and supplying bitumen that meets precise industry specifications, with continued emphasis on innovation and sustainable practices across the bitumen value chain.
